शुष्क अमोनिया `(NH_(3)),OH^(-)` आयन नहीं उत्पन्न करती है । इसलिये लिटमस पेपर पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं होता है । जल में अमोनिया का विलयन `OH^(-)` आयन देता है और लाल लिटमस पेपर को नीला कर देता है ।
`NH_(3) +H_(2)O iff NH_(4)^(+) +OH^(-)`
