L लम्बाई के एक विभवमापी तार जिसका प्रतिरोध r है को श्रेणीक्रम में ,`E_(0)` विधुत वाहक बल की एक बैटरी तथा प्रतिरोध `r_(1)` से जोडा गया है । इस विभवमापी की l लम्बाई पर , किसी अज्ञात विधुत वाहक बल E के लिये संतुलन बिंदु प्राप्त होती है । तो E का मान है :

विभवमापी के तारों में वैधुत धारा ` = E_(0)/(r+r_(1))`
विभवमापी के तार के सिरों के बीच विभवांतर ` =(E_(0) r)/(r+r_(1))`
तार की विभव - प्रवणता ,`K = (E_(0)r)/(r + r_(1)) xx 1/L`
` E = K l = (E_(0) r)/((r+r_(1)))l/L`.
