Five resistors of different resistances are connected together as shown in the figure. A 12V battery is connected to the arrangement. Calculate : 

1. the total resistance in the circuit.

2. the total current flowing in the circuit.

To solve the above Question, we have to first find the total resistance of the circuit. 

Here we find that R1 and R2 are in parallel and their combined resistance R’ is given by R’= 10 × 40/10+40 = 8Ω 

Also, the resistances of 30Ω, 20Ω and 60Ω are in parallel and their combined resistance R” is given by 

1/R” = 1/30 + 1/20 + 1/60 = 2 + 3 + 1/60 = 6/60

R” = 60/6 = 10Ω 

Now, R’ and R” are in series and their combined resistance R is given by. 

R = R’ + R” = 8Ω + 10Ω = 18Ω 

.’. Total resistance in the circuit = 18Ω
