Correct Answer - Option 1 : understands the problems of others

Sympathy

  • It refers to the feeling in which a person understands the problem of another person.
  • Another person does not feel the exactly same pain, but he understands that there is some pain.
  • With sympathy you feel for the person; you are sorry for them or pity them, but you don't specifically understand what they are feeling.
  • Sometimes we are left with little choice but to feel sympathetic because we really can't understand the plight or predicament of someone else.
  • For example, a boy lost his father, his friend will sympathize with him given that his friend did not lose his father. So the friend understands that there is a pain when someone loses his father.

Empathy

  • In empathy, two persons have gone through the same pain, that is why they know each other's pain better. For example, two persons lost their respective grandfather, then they will share the same pain. They would know how exactly does it feel.

Hence, we conclude that in sympathy, a person understands the problems of others.
