An emotion is a complex condition underlying feelings, actions, and physiological changes as occur in fear, rage, excitement, disgust, and so on. An emotion associated with an inherited or innate psycho-physical tendency is called instinct. Instinct determines the emotional excitement and action in a person, on perceiving any object in a particular manner.

Emotion in learning: Periods of tension, fear, disturbance tend to inhibit learning. The teacher creates much of the emotional climate in the classroom. Effective learning depends on the well-adjusted teacher and students.

According to Daniel Goleman, the basic families of Fear are anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, concern, consternation, misgiving, wariness, qualm, edginess, dread, fright, terror, and in extreme cases phobia and panic.

  • Fear is a natural, powerful, and primitive human emotion. It involves a universal biochemical response as well as a high individual emotional response. Fear alerts us to the presence of danger or the threat of harm, whether that danger is physical or psychological.
  • Fear is a response associated with expected danger. Anger is a response when some activity is blocked. Similarly, joy is felt when the need is satisfied.
  • In fear, there is the activity of fight or escape.
  • It is the emotion induced by perceived danger or threat, which causes physiological changes and ultimately behavioral changes.
  • It may occur in response to a certain stimulus happening around a child.
  • The fear response arises from the perception of danger. Fear is far more a liability than an asset where learning is involved. Which Acts as a barrier in the learning process.
  • Fear is modulated by the process of cognition and learning. Thus, fear is classified as rational (appropriate) and irrational (inappropriate). Irrational fear is called a phobia.
  • It closely related to the emotional anxiety
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy has been successful in helping students overcome their fear of any particular situation/subject in the classroom.
  • Because fear is more complex than just forgetting or deleting memories.
  • Common fear triggers: Darkness or loss of visibility of surroundings, Heights and flying, Social interaction and/or rejection, Snakes, rodents, spiders, and other animals, Death and dying.

Hence, we can in a classroom situation, the emotion 'fear' of the learner is an inhibitor.
