Following are the main characteristics of first stage of demographic transition:
1. In this stage, both birth and death rate are high.
2. In this stage, countries show economic backwardness.
3. In first stage, countries’ dependency upon agriculture is more visible.
4. In this stage, population growth is found to be low due to high birth rate and high death rate.
5. Currently, Sudan, Congo, Ghana, Angola, Rhodesia, Nigeria and Guatemala etc. countries are included in this stage.
