(1) Select:

It is used to select tuples in a relation that satisfy a selection condition. To denote selection the lowercase Greek letters are used. The condition appears as a subscript to a. The relation is given in the parenthesis.

Eg: To select the tuples whose salary > 5000 from Employee relation Employee) 

(2) Project:

It selects certain columns from the table and discards the other columns. It is denoted by the Greek letter n.
