After prolonged usage, permutit or resins lose their activity, and hence, are required to be activated. The exhausted zeolite is regenerated by treating with sodium chloride solution.
`CaZ + 2NaCl to Na_(2)Z + CaCl_(2)`
where Z is zeolite.
