The marianas Trench, a region at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean is believed to be the deepest spot on the ocean floor. In 1960. a U.S Navy submersible vehicle werit to a spot in this Trench that is 10.700 m below sea level. Suppose the submarine had a tiny window of area `1cm^2` so that sailors could enjoy the view. Find the force on this window due to the water pressure. Comment on the result.

Best answer
`P=P_(atm)+rhogh=(1.01xx10^5Pa)+(1025(kg)/(m^3))(9.8(m)/(s^2))(10700M)` (`rho` for sea water `=1025(kg)/(m^3)`)
`=1.1xx10^8Pa`
`F=PA=(1.1xx10^8Pa)(1cm^2)`
`=(1.1xx10^8Pa)(1cm^2)`
`=(1.1xx10^8(N)/(m^2))(1xx10^-4m^2)`
`=1.1xx10^4N`
comment. F is approximately the weight of a small automobile. This result explains why submarines do not have large windows.
