Three point charges of + 2 µC, – 3 µC and – 3 µC are kept at the vertices A, B and C respectively of an equilateral triangle of side 20 cm as shown in figure. What should be the sign and magnitude of charge to be placed at the midpoint M of side BC so that charge at A remains in equilibrium?

Let charge placed at M be qM. The forces acting on charge (qA = + 2µC) are FAB, FAC and FAM as shown in figure.

For equilibrium of charge qA: the resultant of \(\vec F\)AB and \(\vec F\)AC  must be equal and opposite to \(\vec F\)AM.
