Pleiotropy is the phenomenon in which a single gene exhibits multiple phenotypic expression. The pleiotropic gene affects the metabolic pathways, resulting in different phenotypes. For example, phenylketonuria is caused by mutation in the gene coding the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase.
