Salient features of theory of Hugo de Vries: 

i. Mutations cause evolution. 

ii. New species originate due to large mutations. 

iii. Evolution is a discontinuous process and not gradual. 

iv. Mutations are directionless, 

v. Mutations appear suddenly. 

vi. Mutations exhibit their effect immediately.
