जब मिश्रण को रक्त तप्त CuO पर प्रवाहित करते है तो सामान्य हाइड्रोजन `(H_(2))` की अपेक्षा भारी हाइड्रोजन `(D_(2))` कम क्रिया करती है। इस प्रकार `D_(2)` को पृथक किया जा सकता है।
`H_(2)+CuOrarrH_(2)O+Cu`
