(b) `(+)2-"Octanol" + CH_3COCl rarr (C) underset (NaOH) overset (Hot) rarr (D)`
(c) `CH_3O^**H+ PhSO_2 Cl rarr (E) underset (NaOH) overset (Hot) rarr (F) + (G)`

Thus, the configuration at chiral `(C -)` is retained. Therefore. If `PhSO_2 Cl//H_2O, overset (Ө) O H` is used inversion takes place , and if `CH_3COCl//H_2 O` or `overset (Ө) O H` is used, retention takes place.
