Best answer
Metal `M` forms two chloride, namely `mCl_2` and `MCl_4` Oxidation state of `M` in ` MCl_4` is ` +4` . This means that ther are four electrons in the valence shell of M : hence `M` blongs to group `14` , i.e., carbon family of the pertiodic table .
