Like alkylation ,acylation also requires a lewis acid of the type `MX_(n)` most commonly `AlCl_(3)` but also `BF_(3)` `FeCl_(3)`, and `ZnCl_(2)` in acylation, a `1:1` complex of `RCOCl` and catalyst forms which then dissociates into the acylium ion:
