कोडीन एक क्षारक है । इसलिए, यह विलयन में निम्न प्रकार वियोजित होगी :
कोडीन `+H_(2)OhArr` कोडीन `H^(+)+OH^(-)`
दिया है `pH=9.95`
`:. pOH =14-9.95=4.05`
अथार्त `-log_(10)[OH^(-)]=4.05`
या `[OH^(-)]=a"antilog"_(10)(-4.05)`
तथा [कोडीन `H^(+)]=[OH^(-)]=8.91xx10^(-5)`
तथा [कोडीन] `=0.005`
`:. K_(b)=(["कोडीन"H^(+)][OH^(-)])/(["कोडीन"])`
`=((8.91xx10^(-5))xx(8.91xx10^(-5)))/(0.005)=1.587xx10^(-6)`
तथा `pK_(b)=-log_(10)K_(b)=-log_(10)1.587xx10^(-6)=5.8`
