During 1970s, India witnessed a rapid increase in the production of agricultural products (particularly wheat) through the introduction of high yielding varieties, increased irrigation facilities, application of fertilizers and pesticides, multiple cropping and better agricultural management. Since the agriculture is mostly concerned by crop plants and the plants are mostly green in colour, the enormous agricultural production has been called as green revolution. This was all done by the efforts of Prof. M.S. Swaminathan who is also father of green revolution in India.
