During secondary treatment, organic wastes (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins etc.) are degarded by the action of bacteria and protozoa which consume these biodyradable organic soluble contaminants and bird into less soluble fraction as floc. The floc settle down resulting in decrease in BOD.
