Common and IUPAC system of nomenclature of ethers
In the common system of nomenclature, the ethers are named by writing names of the alkyl groups attached to the oxygen atom in alphabetical order and word ether is added. If two alkyl groups are same, prefix di- is used.
According too the IUPAC system of nomenclature, ethers are named as alkoxyalkanes.
The larger alkyl group is considered to be parent alkane. The name of the smaller alkane is prefixed by the name of alkoxy group and its locant.
