Electric force
1. Electric force acts on a charged particle at rest or in motion in any direction in electric field.
2. Electric force always acts on the charged particle in the direction of electric field.
3. The electric force on a charged particle is,
`vecF=qvecE`, It depends upon the charge on the particle and is independent of velocity of particle.
4. Work is required to be done in displacing the charged particle in an electric field.
Magnetic force
1. No magnetic force acts on a charged particle at rest in a magnetic field. Magnetic force acts on a moving charged particle only if it is not moving parallel to the direction of magnetic field.
2. Magnetic force always acts in a direction perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field as well as the direction of motion of charged particle.
3. The magnetic force on a charged particle is, `vecF=q(vecvxxvecB)`. It depends upon the charge and velocity of the particle.
4. No work is done by the magnetic field in displacing the charged particle because the force and the displacement are perpendicular to each other.
