Salol, phenyl salicylate (colourless crystals, `mp.43^(@)C`) is prepared by heating salicylic acid with phenol in the presence of phosphoryl chloride `(POCl_(3))`

It can also be prepared by heating sodium salicylate with sodium phenoxide in the presence of `POCL_(3)`.
