दो पतले अभिसारी (convex) लेंसों की क्षमता 5 तथा 4 डायोप्टर हैं। वे समाक्षीय रूप से एक-दूसरे से 10 cm की दुरी पर रखे गए हैं। समतुल्य लेंस की फोकस-दुरी और क्षमता निकालें।

पहले लेंस की क्षमता =5 D , अतः इसकी फोकस-दुरी `f_(1)=1/5 m=20 cm`
तथा दूसरे लेंस की क्षमता =4 D अतः इसकी फोकस-दुरी `f_(2)=1/4 m=25 cm`.
यदि समतुल्य लेंस की फोकस-दुरी f हो, तो
`1/f=1/f_(1)+1/f_(2)-d/(f_(1)f_(2))=1/20+1/25-10/(20 xx25)` [क्योंकि दुरी d = 10 cm]
`=1/20+1/25-1/50=(5+4-2)/100=7/100`
`:. f=100/7=14.28 cm`.
लेंस की क्षमता `P=100/(f(cm))=100/(100/7)=7` डायोप्टर।
अतः समतुल्य लेंस की फोकस-दुरी `=14.3 cm` (लगभग) तथा क्षमता =7 D
