Carboxylic acids with five or less carbon atoms are water soluble while the higher acids are insoluble in water. Explain.

The solublit of carboxylic acid in water is due to the polar COOH group which is involved in hydrogen bonding while the non-polar alkyl group being lyophobic in nature tends to oppose it. As the size of the alkyl group increases, the extent of hydrogen bonding with water decreases and so the solublity in water.
