Alcohols are comparatively more soluble in water than hydrocarbons of comparable melecular masses. Explain this fact.

Intermolecular hydrogen bonding is present in the molecules of alcohol and water while the same is absent in the molecules of hydrocatbon and water. As a result, alcohols are more soluble in water as compared to hydrocarbons which are almost water insoluble.
