त्रिविमीय बाधा (steric hindrance) जितनी अधिक होगी, `S_(N)2` प्रतिस्थापन हेतु क्रियाशीलता उतनी ही कम जाएगी । अतएव कर्म अग्र होगा -

यधपि ऐ सभी `1^(@)` ऐल्किल हैलाइड है लेकिन इनके द्वारा प्रदर्शित त्रिविमीय बाधाएँ (steric hindrance) भिन्न है । यदि पाश्र्व श्रखलाएँ हैलोजन परमाणु से दूर स्थित हैं तो त्रिविमीय बाधा कम होती है । इस कारण `S_(N)2` प्रतिस्थापन के प्रति इनकी क्रियाशीलता का कर्म निम्न होगा -
