Chemical reaction of sulphur with oxygen gives two compounds, sulphur dioxide (SO2) and sulphur trioxide (SO3).

The two masses of oxygen (32 g and 48 g) which combine with the fixed mass of sulphur (32g) in these two compounds bear a simple ratio of small whole numbers, i.e. 32 : 48 or 2 : 3.
This is in accordance with the law of multiple proportions.
