Transition elements have high effective nuclear charge and a large number of valence electrons. Therefore, they form very strong metallic bonds which arise due to the presence of unpaired electron in the (n – 1) d subshell resulting in high enthalpy of atomisation.

Zn has the lowest enthalpy of atomisation due to the absence of unpaired electrons and weak metallic bonds.
