Plants growing in swampy areas, marshy places and salt lakes are called halophytes. Many halophytes develop respiratory roots or pneumatophores. Pneumatophores are negatively geotropic and are provided with pores called lenticels. Since they grow in oxygen-deficient soil, their seeds germinate inside the fruit, when it is still attached with the parents, exhibiting vivipary.
