During the formation of nucleus, certain mass is lost. This phenomenon is known as mass defect (Δm).
The exact mass of nucleus is slightly less than sum of the exact masses of the constituent nucleons. This difference is called as mass defect. It is represented by symbol Δm. Formulae: Δm = calculated mass – observed mass
