The correct option is (c).

Explanation:

Assertion is correct in the sense that the free electrons occupy a single energy band. But a band has a distribution of energy. One can treat assertion as correct. But the reason is,false because electrons in a metal follow Pauli's exclusion principle. It is because of this, one has different bands. Therefore the answer is (c).
