  • The Right to Information (RTI) is an act of the Parliament of India which sets out the rules and procedures regarding citizens' right to information.
  • It was passed on 15 June 2005 and came into force on 12 October 2005.
  • Under the RTI Act, any citizen of India may request information from a public authority that is required to reply within thirty days.
  • The Right to Information Act is intended to promote accountability and transparency in government by making the process of government decision-making more open.
  • The Act extends to the whole of India except Jammu & Kashmir.
  • Central Information Commission (CIC) was established by the Central Government in 2005, under the provisions of the Right to Information Act (2005).
  • It is not a constitutional body.
  • It consists of a Chief Information Commissioner and not more than ten Information Commissioners.
  • The Chief Information Commissioner and an Information Commissioner shall hold office for the tenure of three years or until they attain the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
