In a student hostel, the student fee per day is partly fixed and partly varies depending upon the number of students in the hostel. If the number of students is 24 the fee per students is 340 per day and if the number of students is 32, the fee per students is 290 per day. if the fee per student is 215 then what is the number of students in the hostel?

Calculation:

Let the fixed fee is X and variable fee is Y 

⇒ The total students fee per day when 24 students

⇒ X + 24Y = 340 × 24 .... (1)

⇒ The total students fee per day when 32 students

⇒ X + 32Y = 290 × 32 ..... (2)

⇒ By solving equation (1) and (2) is

⇒ X = 4800 and, Y = 140

⇒ Let the number of students in the hostel be N when fee per student is 215 per day

⇒ 4800 + N × 140 = 215 × N

⇒ N = 64

∴ The number of students is 64.
