Concept:

Aggregate Test

Characteristics

Crushing test

  • Gives a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to crushing under gradually applied compressive load.
  • The aggregate crushing value should not be greater than 30% for the surface course and 45% for the base course

Impact Test

  • Gives a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to suddenly applied load.
  • Aggregate impact value should not be greater than 30% for a surface course and 35% for a base course

Abrasion test

  • Resistance to wear offered by aggregate
  • Abrasion value should not be greater than 35% for Bituminous concrete and 50% for base course.

Soundness test

  • Resistance to weathering action
  • % loss in weight should not be greater than 12% for Na2SO4 and 15% for MgSO4

∴ The aggregate crushing value for concrete as per Indian conditions varies from 30 - 45 %
