Statement (I): Property tables list different values of some properties for a substance at the same state as a result of using different reference states.

Statement (II): The reference state chosen is of no consequence in thermodynamic process calculations as long as we use values from the single consistent set of tables.
1. Both statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is the correct explanation of Statement (I)
2. Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true but statement (II) is not the correct explanation of Statement (I)
3. Statement (I) is true but Statement (II) is false
4. Statement (I) is false but Statement (II) is true

Correct Answer - Option 1 : Both statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is the correct explanation of Statement (I)

Explanation:

  • The property table showing different values of some properties like entropy (s), internal energy (u) and enthalpy (h) etc. can use different reference values. Hence statement I is true.
  • But these reference values have no consequence in thermodynamic process, because we use the difference of these values like difference in entropy Δs, difference in enthalpy Δh or difference in internal energy Δu etc. in our thermodynamic analysis.
  • Hence, the absolute values of the properties have no meaning in thermodynamics. So, statement II is also true and it is the correct explanation of statement I.
  • So, the correct option is option (1).
