A full-wave rectifier using centre tapped transformer and a bridge rectifier use similar diodes and have equal no load output voltage. Under equal load conditions:

1. Output of bridge rectifier will be less than the of the other
2. Output of bridge rectifier will be more than that of the other
3. Output voltage of both will be exactly equal
4. Output voltage of anyone may be more than that of other

Correct Answer - Option 1 : Output of bridge rectifier will be less than the of the other
  • Under equal load conditions, the bridge rectifier needs four diodes, two of which conduct in alternate half cycles.
  • Because of this, the total voltage drop in diodes becomes double of that in the case of center tap rectifier, losses are increased, and rectification efficiency is somewhat reduced.
  • Since two diodes are in series in a bridge rectifier, the voltage drop is more, hence the output of the bridge rectifier will be less than that of the other.
