Correct Answer - Option 1 : only 1

The correct answer is only 1.

  • Radioactivity is the process by which a nucleus of an unstable atom loses energy by emitting particles of ionizing radiation. Hence, we can say that it is a nuclear property. Hence, statement 1 is correct.
  • Radioactivity is the property exhibited by certain types of matter of emitting energy and subatomic particles spontaneously. It is, in essence, an attribute of individual atomic nuclei.
  • The radioactivity of a sample can be measured by counting how many atoms are spontaneously decaying each second.
  • For his discovery of spontaneous radioactivity Becquerel was awarded half of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903, the other half being given to Pierre and Marie Curie for their study of the Becquerel radiation.
  • Common units of radioactivity are the Becquerel, equal to 1 decay per second, and the Curie, equal to 37 billion decays per second.
  • A hydrogen bomb is based on the principle of uncontrollable nuclear fusion. Hence, statement 2 is not correct.
    • Nuclear fusion is the process where the nuclei of two light atoms combine to form a new nucleus.
    • Nuclear fission is a reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei.
