  • Use of Bhakra dam
    • The primary use of the dam is irrigation, rainwater harvesting. Provides irrigation water to Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Himachal Pradesh.
    • The water of Bhakra Dam is used to provide electricity to the states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Himachal Pradesh.

  • The dam is the  second largest water reservoir in India after the Indira Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh in terms of water storage.
  • The Bhakra-Nangal dam is one of the river valley development schemes launched after India's independence.
  • The project was signed by the Revenue Minister of Punjab, Sir Chhotu Ram with the Raja of Bilaspur in November 1944 and finalized on 8 January 1945.
  • The construction of the multipurpose dam was initially started in 1884 by the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Sir Louis Dane.
  • However, it was delayed and it was restarted under the leadership of prominent architect Rai Bahadur Kunwar Sen Gupta.
  • The dam was completed in 1963 and was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
