  • Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer from different ozone-depleting substances.
    • The treaty was signed on 26th August 1987 in Montreal.
    • The Montreal Protocol came into force on 26th August 1989 and since then has undergone nine revisions.
    • Due to this agreement, the ozone hole in Antarctica is recovering slowly.
    • The Montreal Protocol is signed between 197 countries.
  • Basel Convention is an international treaty designed to reduce the movement of hazardous waste between nations and to prevent the transfer of hazardous waste from developed to less developed countries (LDC).
    • The Basel Convention was signed on 22nd March 1989 in Basel, Switzerland.
    • The convention came into effect on 5th May 1992.
  • Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty which is an extension of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 1992.
    • The Kyoto Protocol was signed on 11th December 1997 in Kyoto, Japan.
    • The protocol came into effect on 16th February 2005.

  • Vienna Convention is an international treaty that defines a framework for diplomatic relations between independent countries.
    • The Convention was signed on 18th April 1961 in Vienna.
    • It came into effect on 24th April 1964.
    • As of October 2018, there were 192 state parties to the convention including all United Nations member states except Palau, the Solomon Islands, and South Sudan.
