Correct Answer - Option 2 : 13 April 1919

Jallianwala Bagh Massacre:

  • The incident happened in the backdrop of protests against the Rowlatt Act and the subsequent arrest of Dr. Satyapal and Saifuddin Kichlew.
  • To control the violence that emerged out after the arrest of the two nationalists, restrictions were imposed on the movement of people and holding the demonstrations in Amritsar.
  • But on the day of Baisakhi, April 13, 1919, thousands of people were unaware of the restrictions gathered at Jallianwala Bagh.
  • General Dyer following the orders of Michael O'Dwyer (Lt. Governor of Punjab) directed the troops to surround the gathering and shoot the people without any warning.
  • As a result, thousands of people were killed and injured.
  • After this incident, Rabindra Nath Tagore renounced his Knighthood.
  • Mahatma Gandhi gave up the title of Kaiser-i-Hind and withdrew the Satyagrah against Rowlatt act.

Thus, the "Jallianwala Bagh" Massacre took place on 13 April 1919.

Rowlatt Act:

  • The Rowlatt Act was passed by the British government to increase their grip on power over the common folk.
  • This law was passed in March 1919 by the Imperial Legislative Council which gave them the power to arrest any person without any trial.
  • To abolish this act, Gandhi and the other leaders called for a Hartal (suspension of work) to show Indians’ objection to this rule.
