Explanation:

Varnish: It is nearly homogenous solution of resin in oil, alcohol or turpentine.

Type of varnish:

Oil varnish:

  • It uses linseed oil and takes about 24 hours to dry.
  • Hard resins such as amber, copal etc are used which makes this type of varnish most durable.
  • It is suitable for interior and exterior surfaces.

Spirit varnish:

  • It uses resin of soft variety such as lac or shellac and dissolved in spirit.
  • It made from spirit and wax and dries very quickly
  • These are not durable and very easily affected by weathering action.

Water varnish:

  • In it shellac resin is used with either ammonia, borax, soda is added.
  • These are used for varnishing maps and pictures.

Other varnishes are flat varnish, spar varnish, asphalt varnish etc.
