Correct Answer - Option 4 : I live on the third floor of this building

The teaching of natural numbers can be approached in two ways, either by following the history of the development of number ideas or by simulating the same through activities in the classroom. In both cases, the key idea to be exploited is a one-to-one correspondence between objects in a group and notches or tally marks to keep a record of the sizes of the group.

To any given finite set we attach a label, called a number. The same label is attached to all those sets which are in one-to-one correspondence with the given set. Through activities - playing with blocks, crayons, and other objects -two primary number concepts, cardinal and ordinal, may be developed.

In mathematics, ordinal numbers are used to rank the things or arrangement of things in sequence order. For example, I live on the third floor of this building reflecting number 'three' is used in an ordinal sense. It is showing the sequential counting of the floors the building has.

Ordinal Numbers: These are used not for counting but for ordering and mechanizing the arrangement of things. An ordinal number tells the place in the sequence of numbers (which is used in counting).

  • For example, participants in a conference can be listed in the desired sequence based on some suitable principle, and then this sequence can be mechanized with the help of ordinal numbers.
  • Indo-Arabic numerals (0-9) as ordinal numbers for the systematic listing of subjects both broader and narrower.
  • It not only indicates that on the library shelves the book bearing the class number 954 will come after that of 953 and so on. Similarly, 511 will come earlier than 512 on the shelves, not that it is of less value than 512. And-by the same rule, 45 will come earlier than 5, and 301 earlier than 92.

Hence, we can conclude that number I live on the third floor of this building where 'three' is used in an ordinal sense.
