It is the ratio of speed of light in air to speed of light in any medium.

The absolute refractive index is defined as the ratio of the speed of light in vacuum and in the given medium. The absolute refractive index should never be less than 1.

Let c be the speed of light in vacuum and v in the given medium, then absolute refractive index is given as: n=c/v
