A pond appears to be shallower than it really is when viewed obliquely. Why?

1. Suppose two rays are originated from the bottom of the pond.

2. As these rays get refracted into air, they bend away from the normal. 

3. When these two refracted rays produced backwards they seem to meet at a point higher than the bottom of the pond. 

4. This point gives the apparent position of the bottom of the pond. 

5. Thus the pond appears to be shallower.
