  • The Asiatic Society of Bengal was/were founded by Sir William Jones in 1784.
    •  It was founded by the philologist William Jones on 15 January 1784 in a meeting presided over by Justice Robert Chambers in Calcutta, the then capital of the British Raj.
    •  The Asiatic Society of India was formed mainly with an objective to initiate and enlighten the oriental knowledge available in history, scriptures, or regional texts in India or the Indian subcontinent.
    • The Asiatic Society is an organization founded during the British Raj in India to enhance and further the cause of "Oriental research", in this case, research into India and the surrounding regions.
    • In 1825, the society was renamed "The Asiatic Society".
      • In 1832 the name was changed to "The Asiatic Society of Bengal" and again in 1936 it was renamed  "The Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal".
    • Sir William Jones British Orientalist and jurist who did much to encourage interest in Oriental studies in the West.

  • Sanskrit College at Banaras
    • In 1791 Jonathan Duncan started the Sanskrit College at Benares to promote the study of Hindu laws and philosophy in Banaras.
    • In 1958 the Sanskrit College became a university and in 1974 the name was changed to Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.
  • Calcutta Madrasas
    • In 1781, Warren Hastings founded the Madarasa Aliya or Calcutta Madarasa.
    • Warren Hastings supported the establishment of Asiatic society, (which later became Asiatic Society) in 1784 by Sir William Jones under the chairmanship of Sir Robert Chambers
  • Fort William College
    • Fort William College was an academy of oriental studies and a centre of learning, founded on 10 July 1800 by Lord Wellesley, then Governor-General of British India, located within the Fort William complex in Calcutta
