An objective in teaching may better be defined "as the desired change in behavior in a person that we try to bring about through education". 

  • Objectives are general goals or targets to be achieved to form the base of a subject.
  • They are long-term goals and can be achieved after the completion of the whole course.

Benjamin Bloom's taxonomy is a set of three hierarchical models that refers to the classification of educational learning objectives.

  • In the taxonomy, Bloom identified three domains of learning which include cognitive, affective, and psychomotor.
  • These three domains have been divided in a way that proceeds from the simplest process to the complex.
    • Cognitive: In this domain, only those objectives are included which are concerned with the intellectual abilities and skills of the learner.
    • Affective:  Only those objectives are included that are related to the domain of interests, attitudes, and values that bring out the desirable changes in the same.
    • Conative or psychomotor: It includes physical movement, coordination, and use of the motor-skill areas​. The training of physical activities is the main objective of this domain.

B. S. Bloom has divided the cognitive objectives into six categories (under Bloom's taxonomy) arranged from the lowest to the highest level of functioning.

Their classification is given as under:

Knowledge

  • Remembering and memorizing the facts, principles, and terms in the form they were learned.
  • Knowledge of ways and means of dealing with the problem.
  • Knowledge of structures, theories, principles, and generalizations.

Understanding

  • Basic understanding of the material facts, ideas, methods, processes, principles, or theories, etc.
  • Ability to translate, compare, interpret, and explain.

Application

  • Use or application of generalizations and abstractions in concrete situations.

Analysis

  • Division of contents or material into its elements or constituent parts.

Synthesis

  • Combining elements into a new structure by a proposed set of operations.

Evaluation

  • Judging the value of material for a specified purpose.

 

Hence, it could be concluded that memorizing a rule or a formula is an objective that is knowledge-based.
