Correct Answer - Option 3 : Gout

The correct answer is Gout.

  • Inflammation of joints due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals causes a disorder called gout.
  • It occurs due to the increased level of uric acid in the blood, a condition called hyperuricemia.
  • The kidneys fail to excrete the excess uric acid in the blood and it starts to deposit in the joints in the form of needle-like urate crystals
  • Symptoms: Red & swollen joints, extreme pain in the joints.
  • Gout is diagnosed by taking the fluid of the inflamed joint and examining it under the microscope for urate crystals.

  • Arthritis: The inflammation of joints causing stiffness & pain. It is different from gout and there is no uric acid crystals deposition. There are two types of arthritis: Osteoarthritis & rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Osteoporosis: It is an age-related disorder characterized by decreased bone density and increased chances of fracture. It is commonly seen in elderly people.
  • Decreased levels of estrogen are the common cause
  • Tetany: The rapid spasms (wild contractions) occurring in muscles due to the electrolyte imbalance particularly low calcium ions in the body fluid represents tetany.
