Given:

Two vessels A and B contains spirit and water in the ratio 1 : 2 and 5 : 11 respectively. There contents are mixed in the ratio 3 : 4.

Calculation:

Let  the ratio of spirit in the new mixture be 'x'

Also, the spirit in vessel A be 1/3 and in vessel B be 5/16

⇒ (x - 5/16)/(1/3 - x) = 3/4

⇒ (16x - 5)/4 = (1 - 3x)

⇒ 16x - 5 = 4 - 12x 

⇒ 28x = 9

⇒ x = 9/28

⇒ x = 9/(9 + 19)

∴ Required ratio of spirit and water in the new mixture = 9 : 19
