Correct Answer - Option 1 : Robert Clive

The correct answer is Robert Clive.

  • The Nawab of Bengal Siraj-Ud-Daulah was defeated due to the treachery played by British Officer Robert Clive who was successful in bribing Mir Jafar, the Commander-in-Chief of the Nawab.
  • Robert Clive, a young clerk in the Company's service, proposed that French pressure on Muhammad Ali, besieged at Trichinopoly, could be released by attacking Arcot, the capital of Carnatic
  • The proposal was accepted and Clive assaulted and occupied Arcot with only 200 English and 300 Indian Soldiers.
  • He was twice appointed governor of Bengal, first in 1757 and later in 1765.
  • His crowning glory is arguably the Treaty of Allahabad, signed in 1765 which granted the company the right to collect ‘Diwani’ or revenue on behalf of the empire in Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha and opened the flood gates for British domination.

Edward Clive
  • He was the eldest son of Robert Clive.
Edward Herbert
  • He was the eldest son of Richard Herbert of Montgomery Castle.
Warren Hastings
  • Warren Hastings was the 1st Governor-General of Bengal.
  • In the Dual System, the company had Diwani rights (rights to collect revenue) and the Nizam or Indian chiefs had the administrative authority.
  • Hastings abolished the Dual System that had been established by Robert Clive.
    • The Nawab’s annual allowance of Rs.32 lakh was reduced to Rs.16 lakh.
