  • She was the first woman to earn a D.Sc. Asima Chatterjee showed early promise from any Indian university to earn her M.Sc. degree from Calcutta University in 1938, with organic chemistry as the special paper and D.Sc. 1944 Degree.
  • In 1940, Chatterjee joined Lady Brabourne College, Calcutta, as the Founder Head of the Chemistry Department.
  • In 1944, she was appointed as an Honorary Lecturer in Chemistry, Calcutta University.
  • In 1954, Chatterjee was appointed Reader in the Department of Pure Chemistry, Calcutta University.
  • In 1962, she became the Khaira Professor of Chemistry, one of the most prestigious and coveted Chairs of the Calcutta University.

  • Arati Saha, the first Asian woman to swim across the English Channel. Under the mentorship of Sachin Nag, she won 22 state-level titles between 1945 and 1951. She represented India in the 1952 Olympic Games but did not win any medals.
